Lucian Freud, 1922-2011
I am saddened to hear of the death of Lucian Freud, aged 88. He has influenced my practice and the way I apply paint, never being afraid of allowing representation to get in the way of paint behaviour and making a good painting. Freud has always given figurative painting strength and to see the British (if not worldwide) press praising him as one of the greatest, most influential painters of his era is inspiring, particularly as portraiture is never very fashionable.

I was recently awarded a commission by the Strata building, 8 Walworth Road, London SE1 to create an artwork for their entrance. The piece I created was a collage of past paintings representing a broad cross-section of society, which when combined with their vibrant colours reflect the energy and diversity of the community of Elephant and Castle. An exclusive print of the artwork was auctioned off at the opening of the building back in June 2010 and raised £500 for Camberwell College of Arts to enhance facilities for the benefit of students. The artwork can be viewed 24 hours a day until 30 June 2011.
